Heron Control (Ardea pacifica)

White Faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae), White Necked Heron (Ardea pacifica), Large Egret (Ardea alba), Nankeen Night Heron (Nycticorax caledonicus). All these herons will, for the purpose of general discussion, be grouped together.
All are waders or stalkers of the water’s edge. The night heron, as the name applies, is nocturnal. These birds prey on a variety of live food such as insects, crustaceans, fish, amphibians etc. Generally they’re found in areas all over Australia, except the large egret which isn’t found in the dry interior. They can breed throughout the year depending on the conditions.
These birds weren’t regarded as a pest until the advent of aquaculture. Crayfish farmers in particular can suffer significant losses from these birds.
Apart from total exclusion netting which is expensive and can be difficult to maintain bird proof, the only other method of control is a strong mixture of harassment and distress calls.
Herons are repelled using our our the newly developed device, the Super Pro X or our Marine Pro which is basically a junior version of the Super Pro X. The Super Pro X is a superior unit using up to 8 different marine bird distress calls as well as, if necessary, a variety of mixed distress and harassment sounds.
The other highly successful device is the Bird Gard Laser. This a hand- held laser device with a range of up to 600m is an instant success on herons in low-light conditions (late afternoons to early morning). It is highly recommended for aquaculture.

    • Hi Luana

The devices we use to repel currawongs emit loud sounds and they are too loud to use around a home. At the moment we are experimented with a device to see if it can repel currawongs and we’ll know if that works in a few weeks,

      Regards
      Bird Gard
