White Ibis Control (Threskiornis molucca)

The Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) is a wading bird of the ibis family Threskiornithidae. They are widespread in eastern and south western Australia.
The ibis is increasingly becoming a permanent resident in many towns and cities across Australia. Many take up residence at rubbish tips or the local outdoor cafes and restaurants, becoming totally unafraid of people and making real pests of themselves.
However, of real concern is the growing risk of aircraft striking ibis during take off and landing. Airport surrounds, with their closely mown grass provides ideal feeding grounds for the ibis, which search out grubs, worms, crickets and small lizards, amphibians, etc.
Bird Gard Laser has been trialled and found to be extremely effective in putting Ibis to flight and forcing them out of the area. Like any other light, the laser’s limitation is that it can only operate in low light conditions (i.e. late afternoon to early morning). One of the great capabilities of the laser is its ability to relocate entire roosting colonies of ibis (and cormorants, seagulls,egrets etc) to a different locality, without harming a single bird. Moving the colony to a new roosting site can often mean their finding new breeding areas as well.
